This month, I interviewed historian Devyn Spence Benson about her forthcoming book, Antiracism in Cuba: The Unfinished Revolution (University of North Carolina Press, April ). Based on extensive archival research in Cuba and the United States as well as interviews with Afro-Cuban activists, Antiracism in Cuba explores public debates about race and racism in Cuba . Operation Northwoods was a proposed false flag operation against the Cuban government that originated within the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of the United States government in The proposals called for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) or other U.S. government operatives to both stage and actually commit acts of terrorism .

Scope of this book. Cuba’s National Literacy Campaign of set the stage for a new critical global citizenship in Cuba, and the implications were immense for the rest of Latin America and the entire so-called Third World. Cuba’s Year of Education, , is the focus of the fourth and fifth of six chapters.   Food stores in Cuba are government-run and sell products ranging from highly subsidized to wildly overpriced by global standards. Every Cuban receives a ration book that allows them to buy small quantities of basic goods like rice, beans, eggs and sugar each month for payment equivalent to a few U.S. cents.

It is , as the book opens, and Hurricane Flora has moved away from Haiti and is hitting Cuba. It is a phenomenon that is “bigger than all of Cuba”. Eighty-two year old Maria Sirena has taken refuge along with several other women in Casa Diego Velazquez, the sixteenth century home of the first governor of Cuba, and now a museum.   Books. Novels. Telex From Cuba, by Rachel Kushner: "A sweet, smooth novel of class and power."; Dirty Havana Trilogy, by Pedro Juan Gutiérrez: "The author insists he had never read Charles.
